Shape & Create Your Own Handmade Ceramic Vase

Ready to take your pottery skills a little further?

Join us for a hands-on Vase Workshop at our Laguna Beach studio, where you'll learn how to transform a simple cylinder into a one-of-a-kind ceramic vase. You'll explore shaping techniques, experiment with different forms, and then create your own vase from scratch on the pottery wheel.

With a maximum of just 4–5 participants, this intimate workshop allows for plenty of instructor guidance while giving you the creative freedom to develop a vase shape that feels completely your own.

Workshop Details

Location: 450 Ocean Ave, Laguna Beach, CA
Price: $100 per person
Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours
Age Requirement: 13+
Capacity: Limited to 4–5 participants
Outcome: 1 finished ceramic vase

What You'll Learn

You'll begin with a practice cylinder provided by the studio and learn how to manipulate the clay into different vase forms.

During the workshop, you will:

  • Learn how to shape a cylinder into a vase

  • Explore different vase forms and proportions

  • Practice using pottery tools to alter and refine your piece

  • Learn centering and wall-pulling techniques

  • Throw your own cylinder from scratch

  • Transform your cylinder into a unique vase

  • Add finishing touches, including rim alterations and surface details

  • Select a glaze color for your finished piece

The practice portion is designed to give you the freedom to experiment before creating the vase you'd like to keep.

Create Your Vase From Scratch

After practicing your shaping techniques, you'll move on to creating your final piece.

Your instructor will demonstrate how to center the clay and pull the walls to create a cylinder. From there, you'll use the techniques you've learned to shape your piece into your own vase design.

There is no required vase shape, so you're encouraged to experiment and make something uniquely yours.

What's Included

  • Clay for your practice piece

  • Approximately 1.5 lbs. of clay for your final vase

  • Use of pottery tools and equipment

  • Instructor demonstrations and hands-on guidance

  • Your choice of one glaze color

  • Professional glazing and kiln firing

  • One finished ceramic vase to take home

At the end of the workshop, you'll choose one vase to keep. Our team will glaze and fire your selected piece in your chosen color.

Finished pieces are expected to be ready for pickup in approximately 4 weeks.

Who Is This For?

This workshop is perfect for:

  • Pottery lovers looking to explore new wheel-throwing techniques

  • Anyone interested in learning how to create larger ceramic forms

  • Friends looking for a creative activity together

  • Date nights

  • Anyone who wants to create a functional, one-of-a-kind vase

[I would clarify here whether prior wheel-throwing experience is required before publishing.] Since participants will be centering and pulling their own cylinder, I wouldn't automatically call this "beginner-friendly" or say "no experience required" unless the instructor confirms that.
