On Thursday, January 22nd, in Santa Monica, ceramicist Hank will lead a Surface Design Workshop.
In this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment with various surface design techniques, from carving and stamping to painting and glazing. Our experienced instructor, Hank, will guide you through each method, ensuring you feel confident and inspired. You’ll learn how to manipulate textures and colors, transforming simple pieces of clay into unique works of art that reflect your personal style.
You will work with a cup and dish that the studio prepared beforehand and that are ready to use. They will be at the perfect leather-hard stage. This way, you can focus on surface techniques without worrying about making the piece from the beginning.
Throughout the workshop, Hank will guide you through foundational techniques like:
Sgraffito & colored inlay — revealing tones beneath the surface
Wax abrasion resist — interrupting the surface in expressive ways
Underglaze and slip color application — painting with presence and intention
As you work, you’ll find that the act of shaping and decorating clay can be incredibly therapeutic.
